Oklahoma City Public Schools To Hire First In-District Engineer

Oklahoma City Public Schools, one of the largest employers in Oklahoma, has launched a search for the district’s first in-house engineer. The position will be housed in the Capital Improvements Department.


Position Title: District Engineer

Position Summary: Attend coordination meetings, review plans, and conduct site visits to ensure all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other systems are design/build according to District standards.

Essential Duties:

  • Advise, assist, and make recommendations on the design and construction of multidiscipline engineering projects—MEP, Civil, Structural, etc.
  • Acts as the District’s authority on matters within their engineering discipline, provides engineering support to all projects managed by Capital Improvements—reviews drawings, specifications and submittals.
  • Provide input on projects related to their trade and stay current on new technologies and code changes.
  • Monitors contractors work for conformance with code and construction contract requirements.
  • Develop and review systems dimensional and routine calculations and specifications when needed.
  • Prepare written reports based on findings from studies, structural analyses, and condition assessments.
  • Serves as an intermediary between the project teams and the Operations Directors.
  • Takes part in system commissioning and end-user training.
  • Helps create District CAD and Revit libraries and standards.
  • Updates District’s data base and plans, ensuring all systems are documented after project completion.
  • May perform project management on selected projects as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities):

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Licensed (PE and/or SE) in the state of Oklahoma for a minimum of three (3) years.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of professional experience in engineering design, documentation, and construction administration.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience with public work and/or educational design.
  • Proficient on AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Proficiency and/or working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, 3DS Max, Rhino, SketchUp, Lumion, and/or other design software.
  • Broad knowledge of building systems, technical detailing, material selection, and products.
    Proficiency in MS Office, Microsoft Projects, and Google Suite.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities):

  • Experience in detailing, keyed notes, scheduling, and controls diagrams.
  • Knowledge of how to perform and review energy models and feasibility studies for proposed systems.
  • All-around design thinker, comfortable with data analysis, visualization, and graphics.
  • Engages in local, regional, and/or national industry groups.
  • LEED AP, WELL, CEM, AUTODESK, PMP, and/or CDT Certification
  • Experience with PROCORE, BLUEBEAM REVU, and/or PLANGRID

*Relevant experience may be substituted for formal education at a 2:1 ratio. Therefore for every 1 year of college lacking, 2 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted.

  • Physical/Mental Requirements:
  • Must have adequate manual dexterity to write legibly and perform required duties on the computer.
  • Must have adequate visual acuity to read, interpret and transcribe written material and other required duties.
  • Requires normal range of hearing and clear speaking abilities to interact appropriately with others in person and on the telephone.
  • Requires some stooping, bending, stretching and occasional lifting not to exceed 25 pounds.
  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • May periodically require work outside of normal business hours, including weekends, under sometimes. stressful conditions in order to meet business needs and strict deadlines.

Work Environment:

  • Office duties will be performed in a well-lighted, climate controlled environment.
