Jerron Sherrill and Jair Simon have been awarded $2,000 scholarships from the Oklahoma Engineering Foundation. The scholarship was established in 1976, by the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers and OEF to support scholarships for engineering students at Oklahoma universities.
Jerron Sherrill
Sherrill is from Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and is majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Oklahoma State University. He has worked as an engineering intern at Barnhart Crane and Rigging, Oklahoma City, and Captive-Aire, Muskogee. Here is an excerpt from Sherrill’s scholarship essay:
“…I simply could not say no to engineering. From walking past the University of Oklahoma’s engineering department and seeing the projects students had made on my way to an OU football game, to watching Marvel movies with Tony Stark, engineering and the principles within the field have always fascinated me. This long term fascination eventually led me to choose engineering over other career options.”

Jair Simon
Simon is from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and is majoring Civil Engineering with a minor in Emergency Management at Oklahoma State University. He played trumpet in the Cowboy Marching Band, worked as a Research Assistant at the Bert Cooper Engineering Laboratory and has earned a 4.0 GPA. He is also in the OSU Honors College.
Here is an excerpt from Simon’s scholarship essay.
Since I was young, I’ve been fascinated with engineering. I loved building things and always wondered why things were made the way they were. I excelled in math and STEM courses throughout school. Outside of coursework, my passion for Civil Engineering was confirmed. Unlike many others, I used my Xbox to develop my creativity and knowledge. Games like Minecraft, Poly Bridge, and Cities Skylines revealed my enthusiasm. It’s my dream to make decisions that make the world a better place and give back to my community. My Future With a Degree Working as part of a team to achieve a specific goal, I am confident in my abilities and eager to contribute to this industry with growing demand. Living alone with my mother (a teacher who isn’t paid much), meant college is an uphill battle. Scholarship offers have made all the difference in paying for this very expensive and valuable piece of paper. Regardless of debt, I know that my future lies in Civil Engineering.
